I need help with my ipod?

i just got this ipod nano from a friend, but when i connect it to the computer with the usb, it just shows the Charging sign but it doesnt go on USB mode, any suggestions? the ipod is a 4gen nano, I already have itunes installed in my computer but it still doesnt pop up or anything? i was told it went on usb mode automatically?
